Quicktime 7.6 bug

So today, I was asked to help try to figure out why quicktime 7.6 doesn’t work on streaming content on Windows XP SP3. The situation was that it worked fine for the Administrator account (whom installed it) but not for any of the regular limited users. Domain admins it worked fine and so did anyone that got promoted to Administrator.

Times like this, I head over to http://live.sysinternals.com and grab Filemon. Unable to run it under a limited user (needs to be added to debugging group), I ran it under my Domain Admin account. I started capturing right when I went to see the GI Joe Trailer at Apple’s Trailer’s website. To my suprise, it was accessing the folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\Quicktime

So I changed the permissions so that ComputerName\users could read and look into this directory. After doing that, the limited users could run the quicktime streams just fine and also edit the plugin configurations. Weird eh? We didn’t roll out a real fix but at least we know somewhat is going on.

what worked for me is to copy the .qtp file from C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\Quicktime and put it in the user’s …\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\Quicktime directory
